COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - With so many people choosing to shop online because of the coronavirus pandemic, your sensitive information is more at risk than ever this holiday season.

So here are a few tips to help you stay safe while you shop.

1. Skip the debit card

While shopping online, stick to credit cards or verified payment services like Paypal and ApplePay. Using debit cards is dangerous because it’s linked directly to your bank account. Credit cards offer more protection in case a purchase goes wrong.

2. Keep your eye out for fake links

Sneaky email and fraudulent social media shopping links run rampant this time of year. Look for deals that are too good to be true or do research on the company/store selling before you click. Some links can download malware and harm your computer.

3. Change up your passwords

If you haven’t changed or beefed up your online passwords recently, this is the perfect time to reset many of those. Make sure to write them down and store them in a secure location.

4. Lock your phone & only use secure Wi-Fi

Every device that you use should have updated security systems in place before you shop. Always use a passcode to access your shopping or banking site, and be sure to completely log out of the site before exiting.
